Lester, for example, becomes Vturzhik the Cursed during game play. Participants can become deeply involved in developing their fantasy character and usually take on a new name. Most gather only when the weather permits, with spring and summer the “high season.” The organizations don’t mix, but each sponsors regular regional events and at least one annual national meet in the summer. Generally, they meet once a week for practice or games at parks. Groups enact scenarios from simple one-on-one practices to games resembling Capture the Flag. Each organization has a slightly different emphasis, with Dagorhir stressing the “combat,” Amtgard highlighting the role-playing aspect and the society tending to draw people interested in research and history.Īmid slightly varying rules, two “hits” to the arms, legs or torso (no head shots allowed) essentially “kill” a person for the round.Weapons range from swords and daggers to bows and arrows. The two dozen men - members of a group called the Barony of Blackfire Pass - take part in Amtgard, a national organization whose devotees re-create medieval combat, producing an elaborate fantasy world.Īt least six such groups in central Ohio share the pastime under three organizational structures: Amtgard (one group), Dagorhir (three) and the Society for Creative Anachronism (two). Instead, they have found a way to indulge a passion. The role-playing participants weren’t exactly lost, though. Sandy McBride, surveying the multicolored melee, invoked Peter Pan: “Sometimes I feel like Wendy, and these are my Lost Boys.” At Griggs Reservoir Park on a recent Sunday afternoon, the shouts of men in yellow tunics, purple cloaks and black capes broke the calm - as did the sounds ( Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!) of their foam-padded swords. ![]()
